Autumn Colors with Snow and Fog, nearing Wayah Bald, NC, elevation 4500 feet in the Smokies. Was visiting for the weekend and driving & hiking with a friend. As we neared Wayah Bald, the light mist and fog turned to ice on the leaves. A few hundred feet higher there was light snow and fog creating exciting light and moods that was different at every turn on this high mountain road.

Was driving to a favorite place to photograph raptors before sunrise when I came across these deer at Frosty Meadows in a dense fog.

This little critter seemed so cold with the winds gusting 50 mph during the Blizzard of 2010. He ate for about 15 minutes before taking cover near the ground in dense evergreens.

Late comers to the Eagle Ice Party. There were about 20 eagles fishing from the ice and trees on a cold, winter day, when many other birds "joined the party." It was some sight ot observe.

Being from Australia, how did I land here? Our 22-year old cockatiel was not sure what to think of the blizzard when watching other birds at the bird feeder.

Notice the right wing is much lower than the left wing. About 7 years ago, the wing was injured. A veterinarian said, “we must amputate the wing, it will never heal, she will never fly again." Well, it took a couple of years, but Wendy learned to become a fabulous flyer again. Wendy was a hand-fed baby and given a female name before the colors indicated Wendy was a male. Wendy’s 23rd birthday is upcoming soon.

Chilly Mockingbird Sitting for a Portrait.

The temperature was about 30 degrees and very windy as I took a tripod out of the car to shoot raptors. This mockingbird flew quite close, perching on a post and appearing very curious, he watched every move as the camera went on the tripod. After about 10 or so shots I said good-bye and walked towards a nearby hawk, which did not oblige with such a pose as this mockingbird.

The normally somewhat dull colors stand out on the sparrow during a snow fall. This little fellow seems to be longing for a bit warmer place.

This Osprey "put on the brakes" as approaching a tree limb for landing.

Bald Eagle about to catch a fish. There were about 15 eagles perched and fishing in a cove in Clifton, Va. I had been photographing eagles perched in trees, when I turned around and spotted this eagle diving for a fish. After the successful catch, the eagle flew to a tree to enjoy the fish. The next day, there were 12 eagles within 20 yards of each other perched in two trees providing more photo ops.

It was a cold winter morning when this fox appeared at a favorite cove that had mostly iced over. Eagles were perched in the trees, while this fox got his breakfast fish.

Deep Thought.
While riding a mass transit train into Washington, D.C. on a rainy day, deep thought was apparent as rain dripped down the window.
